This fall, with much anticipation, John I. Smith Elementary reopened its doors as John I. Smith K-8 Center. It is now one of three public K-8 Centers here in Doral. This school year only 6th grade was added. However, each year an additional grade will be added until the school houses grades Pre-K to 8th. Part of offering a middle school curriculum involves electives in addition to the core classes of mathematics, reading, science and geography. This first year, the electives include guitar, Portuguese, art and physical education.

The guitar class, under the direction of the talented Mrs. Morejon, is an addition to the many other musical ensembles already performing at John I. Smith K-8 Center. Mrs. Morejon also has beginning strings, orchestra and choir. These classes practice after school throughout the week and participate yearly at a competition in Orlando, Florida called “Music USA.” There are currently two full classes of guitar comprised solely of 6th grade students.

Another addition that has everyone excited at John I. Smith K-8 Center is Mrs. Cariello’s Portuguese class.  On January 28, 2012, classes were given special recognition for their studies of the Portuguese language. They attended a ceremony hosted by “Talento Brasil”, where the students were recognized and received a medal. “I had fun and felt honored to receive this award,” stated Amanda Ibarra, a 6th grade student.  It was a wonderful opportunity for the students in Mrs. Cariello’s class to participate in such an event. Mrs. Cariello has a hands-on approach in her teaching of the Portuguese language that motivates her students. “I am happy to attend Portuguese because Mrs. Cariello makes the class so much fun,” commented Junissa Dominguez.

Aside from these courses, the students can participate in extracurricular activities offered through Community School Classes. These include jazz, hip hop, cheerleading, soccer, basketball and Tae Kwon Do. These are teams compete in regional and state competitions.

The middle school years can be an emotionally trying time in a person’s development. The teachers and staff of John I. Smith K-8 Center are committed to creating an encouraging environment that fosters creativity and problem solving skills. The sixth grade teachers who have pioneered this addition to the school, feel proud to be part of the addition. They feel that there are several factors that have contributed to the success of the new grade level. Some factors include teamwork, strategic planning, a proactive approach to discipline, and a high level of parental involvement. Teachers have partnered with the City of Doral Police Department to ensure the development of students’ social consciousness. The first workshop dealt with handling peer pressure and conflict resolution. They feel that a proactive approach to discipline is crucial to the students’ success.

As the City of Doral gears up for Relay for Life in the spring, John I. Smith K-8 Center is currently among the top fundraisers for the event. The 6th grade students hosted a talent show back in November. They planned and worked diligently to raise as much money as possible. They are now in the midst of a contest to see which homeroom raises the most money over a two week period. Soon they will be joining the 5th graders in an event called “Purple Week” when students make donations to Relay for Life and participate in daily activities.

At John I. Smith K-8 Center each grade level is responsible for a different charity. The students are taught the importance of giving back to the community. They plan and execute the collection of goods or funds for a charity of their choice each year. Kindergarten has taken on the month of February, in which they collect teddy bears for children hospitalized at Miami Children’s Hospital. Second grade will soon be collecting food and supplies for the Humane Society.

Under the direction of Mrs. Gwendolyn C. Hines, the new K-8 Center is off to a strong start. As new grades open, so do opportunities for new elective courses. As their theme says, John I. Smith is “Growing Together” into another K-8 Center Doral can be proud of.

El tema de  John I. Smith es “Creciendo Juntos”… Doral  puede estar orgulloso de su nuevo K-8 Center.

Este otoño, con mucha anticipación, John I. Smith Elementary reabrió sus puertas como John I. Smith K-8 Center. Ahora es una de las tres escuelas públicas K-8  Center aquí en Doral. Este año la escuela añadió sólo el 6 º grado .Sin embargo, cada año, un grado adicional se añadirá hasta que  la escuela complete todos los grados  los grados , es decir Pre-K al 8vo. Al incorporar el programa de la escuela intermedia, se ofrece  un plan nuevo consiste en asignaturas optativas, además de las clases básicas de matemáticas, lectura, ciencias y geografía. Este primer año, las asignaturas optativas incluyen guitarra, portugués, arte y educación física.

La clase de guitarra, bajo la dirección de la talentosa señora Morejón, se suma a los muchos otros conjuntos musicales que ya enorgullecen  a John I. Smith K-8 Center. La señora Morejón también ha comenzando a enseñar instrumentos de cuerdas, orquesta y coro. Los niños practican también después de clases y durante toda la semana . Muy pronto van a participar en un concurso anual en Orlando, Florida llamado “Music EE.UU” .. Actualmente hay dos clases completas de guitarra integrado exclusivamente por alumnos de 6 º grado.

Otra novedad que ha causado grandes expectativas en la escuela, es la clase de Portugués , dictada por Ms. Cariello. El 28 de enero de 2012, la clases recibió un reconocimiento especial por sus estudios sobre la lengua portuguesa. Ellos asistieron a la ceremonia organizada por “Talento Brasil”, donde los estudiantes recibieron una medalla. “Me divertí mucho y me sentí honrada al recibir este premio”, comentó Amanda Ibarra, estudiante de 6 º grado. Fue una oportunidad maravillosa para  los estudiantes de la Sra. Cariello el   participar en dicho evento. La señora Cariello tiene un enfoque práctico en la enseñanza de la lengua portuguesa que motiva a sus estudiantes. ” Me hace feliz aprender portugués , porque la señora Cariello hace la clase muy divertida”, comentó Junissa Domínguez.

Aparte de estos cursos, los estudiantes pueden participar en actividades extracurriculares que se ofrecen a través de clases de la Escuela de la Comunidad. Estos incluyen el Jazz, Hip Hop, Porristas, Fútbol, Baloncesto y Tae Kwon Do. Estos equipos compiten en competiciones regionales y estatales.

Los escuela intermedia puede ser un momento muy importante, emocionalmente relacionado al desarrollo de un individuo. Los maestros y el personal de John I. Smith K-8 Center se comprometen a crear un entorno favorable que promueva la creatividad y habilidades para resolver problemas. Los maestros de sexto grado que han sido pioneros de esta adición a la escuela y se sienten orgullosos. Ellos sienten que hay varios factores que han contribuido al éxito del nivel de su nuevo grado. Algunos factores incluyen el trabajo en equipo, planificación estratégica, un enfoque proactivo a la disciplina, y un alto nivel de participación de los padres. Los maestros se han asociado con la Ciudad de Doral Departamento de Policía para garantizar el desarrollo de la conciencia social de los estudiantes. El primer taller se trató con el manejo de la presión de grupo y resolución de conflictos. Ellos sienten que un enfoque proactivo para la disciplina es crucial para el éxito de los estudiantes.

A medida que la Ciudad de Doral  se organiza para su 10mo “Relay for Life” , John I. Smith K-8 Center es actualmente uno de los principales recaudadores de fondos para el evento. Los alumnos de 6 º grado organizaron  un concurso de talentos en noviembre. Planearon y trabajaron  diligentemente para recaudar dinero tanto como sea posible. Ahora se encuentran en medio de un concurso para ver qué aula plantea la mayor cantidad de dinero durante un período de dos semanas. Pronto se unirán a los estudiantes de 5to grado en un evento llamado “Semana de la púrpura” cuando los estudiantes hacen donaciones a Relay for Life” y participar en las actividades diarias.

En John I. Smith K-8 Center cada nivel de grado es responsable de una organización benéfica diferente. A los estudiantes se les enseña la importancia de retribuir a la comunidad. Ellos planifican y ejecutan el conjunto de bienes o fondos para una organización benéfica de su elección cada año. El  Jardín d infancia trabajó el mes de febrero, en el que se recogen los osos de peluche para los niños hospitalizados en el Hospital Infantil de Miami. Segundo grado muy pronto estará recaudando alimentos y suministros para la Sociedad Protectora de Animales.

Bajo la dirección de la Sra. Gwendolyn C. Hines, la nueva K-8 Center tuvo comienzo fuerte. Como abrir nuevos grados, también lo hacen las oportunidades para los nuevos cursos electivos. El tema de  John I. Smith es “Creciendo Juntos” Doral  puede estar orgulloso de su nuevo K-8 Center.

There is no other outcome; when parents get together and become involved, with an efficient administration, responsible politicians, loyal civil servants and above all, a respectful yet firm community, everything tends to work out. In the last issue we reported on the serious traffic problem facing DRE K-8 during pick up and drop off times. We were in the process of editing when we received information from Mr. José Silva, indicating that thanks to the support from all parties involved, the situation is greatly improving.

We had access to a series of communications maintained by the participants, each clearly detailing the situation and offering alternative solutions. The traffic cones were placed in the requested locations, the police tightened control, parents received further instructions about the process of dismissal, new signals were added and thus the change to orderly and safe traffic is evident.

According to Jose Silva, the cones placed in the 112th Av. made a big difference to the traffic. Police have blocked the intersection right / left from 86^th  Street to 112 Avenue. This action, alongside the cones, helped increase the number of cars entering the school to an average of 14 cars with each green light.

Mr. Silva added that most parents are pleased with the progress. He also emphasized the importance of the presence of Ms. Vangates and the school authorities at critical times, supporting the process of organizing the traffic. Jose Silva spared no praise to all involved in this solution, North Central Region Superintendent Dr. Marinelli, Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez and Councilman Cabrera, Mr. Erick Carpenter, Ms. Olga Fulgueira, DRE PTA, Ms. Reva Vangates (“She sees the school as an extension of her house,” he said) and Police Chief Rick Gomez.

We took the time to interview Jose Silva and these were his responses

 1) Mr. Silva, are you aware that the group of parents that supported you has accomplished something amazing in our community? Any thoughts?

I firmly believe that the home does not end at the door of the house and that the responsibility for improving the environment in which we live is equally applicable to the authorities and citizens. I took this spirit in and sought what I believed were the most competent bodies to come help us. After two years, I can say that the main feeling is of satisfaction because they have made remarkable advances that have improved the safety of children and the quality of life of parents and neighbors of the school. The effort has been through teamwork and the initiative of Giovanna La Cruz  for collecting signatures and  the support of these 126 parents made a tremendous difference to achieve some of these changes.

2) Often people believe that by raising one’s voice or being disrespectful is the only way to get things done. You were patient and educated and taught a lot of people a lesson. How did you do it?

Violence is the weapon of those who have no reason. Perseverance leads to success to those who defend the truth and principles without affecting the rights of others. From the start, I have been clear that those who could help us were the authorities of the City of Doral, Miami-Dade County, the Public School System and especially Miami-Dade School. Therefore it was impossible to raise your voice or be disrespectful to them. There was no, nor will there be reason to be that way because I know everyone’s aim is to help. I extend my greatest gratitude to all. The key for success was in not being afraid to expose the problem of security against the entities involved, presenting evidence of the situation and being part of the solution.

3) We have seen changes in traffic DRE K-8, is there anything pending?

Community awareness. Unfortunately there are parents who choose to ignore the rules and laws. This continues to affect the safety of our children. Also, the installation of signals by Miami-Dade County to prohibit crossing south from 86th Street during school hours is a top priority.

Finally, it is also essential for the school system to indicate when it will extend the sidewalk south of 86th Street adjacent to the lake, which seems to have been built for a much smaller number of people. During the time of arrival and departure, children and parents are forced to walk in the street between cars in motion due to the narrowness of the sidewalk, which is unsafe.  Every process can be improved. So keep in touch with local authorities and the School System to continue working. We also hope to have the presence of the police frequently. They are a fundamental part to avoid traffic chaos.

From these lines we want to say thanks, thanks to Jose Silva, Aleida Chavez, Giovanna la Cruz, for being so respectful and brave; thanks to Ms Reva Vangates & Dr. Marinelli for strongly supporting the solution of the problem; thanks to City of Doral, its leaders and officials for their efficiency; thanks to the City of Doral Police for their professionalism and thanks to all the parents who understood that the only way to reach success is by doing things the right way!

Dr. Rolando Espinosa camino a la solución del problema de tráfico.

No podía ser de otra manera, cuando se unen padres comprometidos, una administración eficiente, políticos responsables, servidores públicos leales y sobre todo, una comunidad respetuosas pero firme, todo tiende a salir bien. En la edición pasada informamos acerca del grave problema de tráfico que enfrentaba DRE K-8 con respecto a la entrada y salida de los estudiantes y el peligro que eso implicaba. No terminábamos de editar cuando recibimos información del Sr. José Silva, indicándonos que gracias al aporte de todos los involucrados, la situación se veía mejorar notablemente.

Tuvimos acceso a una serie de comunicaciones que mantuvieron los participantes, en cada una se detallaba claramente la situación y se ofrecían alternativas de solución. Se colocaron los conos en los lugares solicitados, la policía reforzó el control, los padres de familia recibieron nuevas instrucciones acerca del proceso de llevar y recoger sus hijos, nuevas señales se agregaron y un tráfico mas ordenado y seguro es lo que se ve hoy.

Según José Silva, los conos colocados en al avenida 112^th hicieron una gran diferencia con respecto al tráfico. La policía ha bloqueado el cruce  derecha/izquierda  desde la 86 calle hasta la 112 avenida.  Por lo pronto, gracias a ésta acción y a los conos, el número de autos que entran a la escuela es en promedio de 14 en cada cambio de luz.

Silva agregó que la mayoría de los padres están complacidos… También recalcó la importancia de contar con la presencia de la Directora de la escuela y de las autoridades en las horas críticas, apoyando en el proceso de organización del tráfico.

José Silva no escatimó en elogiar a todos los que intervinieron en esta solución: Dr. Marinelli, Superintendente Región North Central, Alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez y Concejal Cabrera, Sr. Erick Carpenter, Sra. Olga Fulgueira, DRE PTA, Ms. Reva Vangates (“ Ella ve la escuela como una extensión de sus casa”, nos dijo) y el Jefe de Policía  Rick Gómez.

Nos dimos a la tarea de entrevistar a José Silva y estas fueron sus respuestas:

1) Sr. Silva está consciente que usted con el grupo de padres que lo apoyó, ha logrado algo increíble en la comunidad? Qué nos puede decir?

Creo firmemente que el hogar no termina en la puerta de la casa y que la responsabilidad de mejorar el entorno en el que se vive corresponde por igual a las autoridades y a los  ciudadanos. Con ese ánimo en 2010 acudí a los organismos que pensé eran competentes para que nos ayudaran. Después de dos años, le puedo decir que el principal sentimiento es de satisfacción pues se han hecho avances notorios que han permitido mejorar la seguridad de los niños y la calidad de vida de los padres y vecinos de la Escuela. El esfuerzo ha sido en equipo y la iniciativa de recolección de las firmas que tuvo Giovanna La Cruz y el apoyo de esos 126 padres hicieron una gran diferencia para lograr algunos de los cambios.

2) Muchas veces se cree que levantando la voz o siendo irrespetuoso se consiguen las cosas. Usted fue paciente y educado, y dio una gran lección. Cómo lo hizo?

La violencia es el arma de los que no tienen la razón. La perseverancia lleva al éxito a aquellos que defienden la verdad y los principios sin afectar el derecho de los demás. Desde el primer momento he tenido claro que quienes nos podían ayudar eran las autoridades de la Ciudad de Doral, del Condado Miami-Dade, del Sistema de Escuelas Públicas de Miami-Dade y especialmente de la Escuela. Era imposible entonces levantar la voz o ser irrespetuoso con ellos. No hubo ni habrá ninguna razón para hacerlo pues sé que el ánimo de  todos es ayudar. Vaya a todos mi mayor agradecimiento.  La clave ha sido no sentir miedo de exponer el problema de la seguridad ante los entes involucrados,  presentar pruebas evidentes de la situación  y ser parte de la solución.

3) Hemos vistos cambios en el tráfico de DRE K-8, qué queda pendiente?

Conciencia ciudadana. Lamentablemente todavía existen padres  que deciden ignorar las reglas y leyes. Esto sigue afectando la seguridad de nuestros hijos.   También la instalación de señales por parte del Condado Miami-Dade que prohíban el cruce hacia el Sur desde la calle 86 en hora escolar.   Finalmente es también  indispensable que el Sistema Escolar indique cuándo ampliarán la acera Sur de la calle 86 aledaña al lago, que parece haber sido construida para un número mucho menor de personas. Durante  la hora de llegada y de salida, hay niños y padres obligados a caminar en la calle y entre los carros en movimiento debido a lo angosto de la acera lo cual es inseguro.     Todo proceso puedo ser mejorado. Por eso seguiremos en contacto con las autoridades locales y del Sistema Escolar para seguir colaborando. También esperamos poder contar con la presencia de la Policía de forma frecuente. Ellos son una parte fundamental para evitar el caos vehicular.

Desde estas líneas solo queremos decir gracias a José Silva, Aleida Chávez, Giovanna la Cruz, por haber sido tan respetuosos y valientes, gracias  a Ms. Vangates y a Dr. Marinelli por apoyar fuertemente  la solución del problema, y a la Ciudad de Doral, a sus líderes y funcionarios por su eficiencia, a la policía de la ciudad  por su profesionalismo y  gracias  a los padres que entendieron que la única forma de hacer las cosas es hacerlas bien!!!

Superintendent Carvalho address the crowd of over 800 guests with this phrase. The ceremony, held at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa, honored teachers who were nominated for their individual schools, rookie teachers and finalists from the district’s six regions.

Alexandre Lopes, special education teacher in Carol City Elementary School (North Central Region) was chosen from a pool of 25,000 Miami Dade County teachers as the “2013 Teacher of the Year”. A Brazil native, LEAP  (Learning Experience: Alternative Program) teacher, he also has a PHD from FIU.

The runner up “Teacher of the Year 2013” was Ms. Mia La France from Dr. Henry W.Mack/West Little River Rock K-8 (Education Transformation Office)

“The Rookie Teacher of the Year 2013” was Sherif Watson from Santa Clara Elementary School (North Central Region); the runner up was Annette Konoske Graf, teacher at Miami Edison High School (Education Transformation Office).

One of the people most excited was of course the Superintendent of the North Central Region, Dr. Carmen Marinelli, who shared her joy and pride to have such valuable teachers working with her. Ms. Dinah Gonzalez, EBT K-8 Center Teacher of the Year, told us he was very excited about her nomination and support from colleagues and administration. She added, “I am more inspired today to be a better teacher for tomorrow”. Ms. Pricilla Chaca, a language arts teacher was nominated by Doral Middle School. She said: “This event in wonderful, everything that champions teachers and educators is always great.”  Ms. Chaca told us how proud she was to represent the wonderful school that is DMS, a place where everyone deserves a nomination.

It was a great event where those who change our lives every day were honored and deserve our recognition, Thank you teachers!

Mucho se ha discutido sobre los proyectos de ley Stop Online Piracy Act (S.O.P.A.)  y  Protect IP Act (P.IP.A) y sin embargo aún hay dudas sobre el impacto que ambas leyes con su formulación actual pueden tener en la libertad de expresión y uso del internet, razón por la cual sus discusiones fueron pospuestas en el Congreso hasta que sean reformuladas en términos que protejan tanto los derechos de los autores como la libertad de quienes diariamente quieren tener acceso a la información global.

Con el objetivo de proporcionar a nuestros lectores una explicación sencilla y aplicada sobre estas leyes, entrevistamos a nuestro consultor Solange Reyes de The Producers Miami. A continuación reproducimos sus respuestas.

DFJ: Solange, ¿Cómo beneficiaria la promulgación de S.O.P.A y P.IP.A a las industrias del cine y la música?

“Este tema es muy viejo para las casas disqueras y de cine y la piratería no nació con la Internet. Esta simplemente obligó a las mismas a que restructuraran su sistema de comercialización; por ejemplo, la internet abarató los costos de producción de las casas disqueras, lo que “mato” fue al CD (físico), ahora se volvió a la época del single haciendo las producciones discográficas mas económicas; gracias a la Internet han aparecido nuevos artistas que posiblemente no hubieran tenido oportunidades de otra manera.  Las películas que se compran por internet a través de empresas legales, aportan millones de dólares .Este es un tema muy extenso y solo para resumirlo podríamos indicar que el cambio no debe venir por una ley hecha para los infractores,  eso es una cuestión de moral, debe venir dela utilización responsable de esta vía de comunicación, y esto es cuestión de ética del usuario.”

DFJ: ¿Nos puedes hablar del impacto del blackout de Wikipedia y otros sites para protestar por las leyes?

A la protesta de Wikipedia se unieron: AOL, Creative Commons Foundation, eBay, Facebook, Google, Mozilla,  Twitter y Yahoo; quienes ya tienen mecanismos de protección y “filtros”. Esta unión provocó 2 movimientos:  detener la  ley por un lado; y por el otro, fue también un llamado de atención para aquellos que si estaban  infringiendo la Ley  y que fueron  penalizados.”

DFJ: ¿Cómo afectaría la promulgación de SOPA y/o PIPA a los desarrolladores de páginas web y escritores de blogs?

“La internet es un fenómeno que al salirse delos límites físicos su control se ha dificultado, la tecnología ha hecho fácil copiar, modificar y compartir información bien sea en texto, imagen, sonido o video, a través de la red; pero eso no significa que los derechos de autor no existan. La codicia, el desconocimiento, la falta de ética y un poco también causas políticas (miedo de los gobiernos de no poder controlar la información)  son los factores que generaron la controversial ley SOPA/PIPA (Stop Online Piracy Act), la cual a la vez es también de forma velada un atentado a la libertad de expresión, este tipo de leyes pueden ser peligrosas porque pueden entrar arbitrariedades de quienes la aplican (¿Quién censura a los que censuran?). La ambigüedad de esta ley  se ve reflejada por ejemplo en la obligación de retirar enlaces con página extranjeras dudosas de la aplicación de los derechos de autor, esto es muy ambiguo ya que podría afectar sitios que son legítimos con información real y legal. La Ley de los derechos de autor ya existe, la  Copyright Law y puede ser consultada y utilizada como base y criterio ético para la Internet.”

DFJ: ¿Para evitar ser considerado Pirata Informático bastaría con colocar los crédito de las fotos utilizadas o las citas bibliográficas para utilizar material con derechos de autor o tendrían que tomarse acciones adicionales antes de usarlos?

Basados en la Copyright Law en la sección de “Fair Use”,  vamos a nombrar una simple lista de “SI” y “NO” que podrían guiar el manejo de esta situación (no es un consejo  legal pero si es un procedimiento sano de protección de los derechos propios y los ajenos:

SI Puedes:

• Utilizar comillas para demarcar las frases extraídas de otras fuentes cuando son utilizadas en comentarios (cortos) con fines de crítica, noticia o mención.
• Se puede utilizar material de dominio público producidos antes de 1923 o en el 1977 que no hayan hecho cambios.
• Ser creativo en la exposición de las ideas, eso es la verdadera libertad.
• Si va a utilizar materia proveniente de otro sitio, es importante que lea las condiciones que ellos establecen. Muchas páginas indican cómo utilizar el material presentado por ellos (si es citándolos, haciendo links, si puede o no compartirse o copiarse la información, etc.).

NO Puedes:

• Copiar material ajeno aunque no diga que está protegido, desde 1978 aunque no se señale no significa que no está protegido,  TODO material publicado obtiene AUTOMATICAMENTE la protección de la ley, explícitamente o no.
• Así no sea para uso comercial, ningún material puede ser utilizado sin autorización expresa de su autor.
• Remover el material protegido de un website no significa que se va salir del problema, todo dependerá si el autor original tome medidas legales.
• Si no puedes encontrar el dueño del material, mejor NO lo publiques, el hecho que no se pueda encontrar no significa que no existe.
• No hagas a otros lo que no quieres que te hagan a ti;  la utilización justa no implica el robo del trabajo creativo de otros.

DFJ: Los Blogs permiten a sus dueños expresar sus opiniones personales. Cuando nombren alguna marca registrada ¿tendrán que hacerla salvedad colocando (TM) o (R) al lado de los nombres? ¿Es eso coartar la libertad de expresión o de opinión?

“Principalmente es importante conocer las leyes de protección intelectual. Recomiendo la lectura del Copyright Law, Capitulo 1, apartado sobre “Fair Use” en la pagina 19 (www.copyright.gov) para comprender mejor de que manera hay que hacer referencia a material previamente registrado como protegido. After months of negotiations, finally the news went public on January 26^th when The Miami Herald officially announced they will be moving from their current home in Downtown to establish their new headquarters in Doral.

To welcome such an important new business in our area is of great impact for the city and represents an exciting change for the more than 700 Herald employees. The 108 year-old media company has called One Herald Plaza in Downtown Miami home since 1963 and the building, designed by architect Sigurd Naess, is a landmark in the skyline of Biscayne Bay. This location was sold in May 2011 and that propelled the process of finding a new suitable location with enough space to accommodate an office building and a printing plant. The move has to be completed by mid-2013.

Doral Family Journal had the exclusive opportunity to know all the details on the selection process of their new facility firsthand from Mr. David Landsberg, President and Publisher of The Miami Herald, who also commented about the expectations the Herald employees have before they move to our neighborhood.

The process of looking for a place for a business like The Herald is not an easy task as Mr. Landsberg explains: “Our property was sold a little bit more than 6 months ago, and it of course includes all the land that we are currently on, and the building and our printing plant. Because of the buyer, we are on a very short timeframe to work with, and when I say short 2 years in total is plenty of time to move an office but a tight amount of time to move a plant. We got to work immediately”. The alternatives included moving the office and the plant together, moving the production plant to somewhere different than the offices, the decision on leasing or buying office space, the possibility to use existing buildings or facilities or just deciding to build-to-suit.  But what was clear was the location. “It could not be north of Gratigny Highway, we did not want to be south of 836, because we do a lot of business in Broward as well. We did not want to be east of I95 like we are today and not very much west of the Palmetto. So we did a big box in the center of the County and said we needed to be either in that box or very near to it.” The City of Doral begins right next to the western limit of the box.

There were four main reasons for defining those boundaries. The first and foremost was the logistics of distribution then, the reporters and advertisers proximity to their sources and clients and last but not least they considered where the employees live. “They are pretty evenly dispersed across Dade county and South Broward. That was also a consideration for us. That our employees are able to easily come and go.” Another consideration was the quality of life that would surround the new location; they needed a good place to go to work. “We looked everywhere and found that Doral is a well-developed and fast growing city with lots of amenities, lots of stores and commerce and restaurants. A good place! A safe and secure place also, that was important to us. “

However, the main challenge was to find enough land and space for a business like theirs. “If you are trying to take somewhere around 160,000 square feet for the business itself, outside of the production plant, there are not many places in Dade County that can house that. In fact, there is nowhere in the center part of the County with that kind square feet of space available.  It really came down to Downtown and Doral in West Dade, one of the 2, and part of the decision was we could have a very nice accommodation for a very reasonable price in Doral compared to downtown Miami.” The fact that Univision, CBS channel 4 and many other media companies are located in the Doral area added to the decision. “It became logical that Doral would be an area that we’ll consider heavily.”

Upon seeing the former Southern Command building, located at 3511 NW 91 Avenue, they knew they had hit the jackpot. Well located, easy access, well maintained and with additional space nearby. Simply perfect for what they were looking for. “The quality of that building I think is one of the strongest buildings in all of South Florida, in terms of the quality of the building and the strength of the construction.”

The Miami Herald has never failed one day to publish on their 108 years of history, therefore counting with a strong and reliable building was fundamental on the decision making process. “When we saw that building and what we can do with it we became very convinced that it was a very good place for us. What we are going to be doing is leasing that building from its current owners for 15 years and those same owners have more land surrounding that building. That building sits on 9 acres and the land next to it which they agreed to sell us is 6 acres, there we are going to build the printing plant on.  So together, the 2 pieces are 15 acres, a very big space, that doesn’t exist everywhere either.  So the opportunity to put the printing plant next to our building was another very valuable thing for us. Also this building has a pretty extraordinary power generation because the military was there, and it is a very impressive set of generators, that basically are worked into the land deal, so we are the owners. And we are going to use them to prevent against power lose and our ability to produce a paper. That is a capability we don’t even have today. “

In addition, leasing an existing office building and gut it is a more cost-effective solution for their needs “It is the best of both worlds. It is one of the strongest buildings in South Florida, but we have enough money to gut it and make the inside of it function exactly as a major newspaper operation would function. It will really meet our needs and we get to design the interior from scratch. That works very well for us. And the whole operation with 2 buildings and 15 acres of land has the feel of a campus, of a corporate headquarters that would be right for us.” In spite of having leased the building for 15 years, they are purchasing the nearby land and building the printing plant, therefore The Miami Herald comes to Doral to stay. That is the long term plan.” It is not really easy to move around as a big company and we don’t want to do that multiple times so as far as we know, we are coming to stay there for a long, long time.

GETTING THE EMPLOYEES USED TO THE IDEA

There is an estimate of 700 employees that will be working between the office building and the plant building, although not all of them will be there at the same time. “Our reporters and people from our ad sales team work outside of the office a lot.  They will continue to work outside of the office a lot and use the building as a home base. If there is a reporter that covers downtown it is very possible that they would not come to the office at all on a certain day. They can cover and file a story from wherever that there is internet access. Today’s world allows us to do that a lot more. Also, for those employees that live in the east, coming to Doral is an opposite traffic commute. They will get it easier than the people today that live in West Broward and commute to downtown.”

Change management with Herald employees has been done from the day the sale of One Herald Plaza was announced. Communication has been constant on the process of looking for a new place and details were informed as soon as the deal was done. Now, “there is going to be very regular communication with them, about the development of our property, how is it going, and we are going to be giving them information about improvements in traffic and commute. There are many projects, including interchanges that are being completed now and improvements to the Palmetto that have been underway, the big portion of that will be done in the next year and a half. So we are just trying to give the employees the best information that we can about both the progress the site is making and maybe tips on where the improvements are coming. We’ll help them acclimate to what Doral is, help them understand about businesses and restaurants and things that can be part of their lifestyle; the malls that are close by, many, many things that are quality of Doral, they may not know it well yet. In the coming year and a half they will get to know Doral much better.”

DORAL HAS A LOT TO OFFER

Upon being questioned on how can the Doral community help the Miami Herald employees feel more comfortable with the idea of moving their headquarters to our city, Mr. Landsberg said: “One thing we will need help with is to move the project along fast. There is not a lot of time, so we expect to be meeting with the Doral officials soon to talk about our project and I suppose we will get a chance to talk about different things that can be helpful to the employees as well. We will have a pretty open line of communication with Doral officials and allow them to help us to acclimate to the market and tell us all kinds of things that we don’t know about Doral yet that will help our employees; that we are looking forward to. We view Doral as a business friendly city that really reaches out with open arms to grow and improve, and it is also, we know from statistics, a place that has rapidly expanded residentially also. We understand that, if not the fastest, it is one of the fastest growing municipalities in South Florida, and we will learn all about that Doral has to offer.”

Regarding the widespread Hispanic origin of the Doral residents and the fact that it is a bilingual community, Mr. Landsberg emphasized that The Miami Herald “is a business that deeply understands the diversity of South Florida, that is why we produce newspapers in both English and Spanish, and have an award winning newspaper in Spanish, and moving out of Downtown and into the community gives us a chance to be closer to our readers, to all of our readers. We think that is an opportunity.” And concludes: “Sometimes change is difficult; it just takes a little bit of time to acclimate. We have a year and a half; we have got plenty of time to understand more about Doral and specially all it has to offer and people will become comfortable with it, I am certain.”

OUR MAYOR’S OPINION

Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez

On February 3^rd the City of Doral sent a press release welcoming The Miami Herald to our city, and Mr. Juan Carlos Bermudez gave Doral Family Journal his opinion and comments on the impact receiving this new neighbor will have on our City, in terms of traffic, population, economy and prestige to our community.

According to Mr. Bermudez, as The Miami Herald is moving to an existing building the impact on traffic is not expected to be that heavy. It is located on 33^rd street, that just last year was finally extended all the way from 107^th Avenue to 79^th avenue, giving easy access to the new location for the 700 Herald employees expected to move in. Also it is far enough from any residential area of Doral, to avoid any noise disturbance due to trucks traffic or the printing plant work. However, “as the printing plant will have to be built following the codes and ordinances of noise reduction of the City of Doral, we are sure it is not going to be a nuisance to anyone.”

Before the lease of the building was closed, Herald personnel met with the City Manager and other City Departments in order to get the information related to permits among many other details that would impact their decision, although they have yet to meet with the City Officials. “I will coordinate an event with the Council in order to meet with them and welcome them to the City and our community” said Mr. Bermudez.

And as a final remark our Mayor added: “Doral growth reflects the present and future of Miami-Dade County. The majority of residents now live on the West. It was not like that 50 years ago when The Miami Herald moved to their current location near the Bay. They are used to working on that beautiful building and to have access to Downtown. But the future of the County is on the West. They will find out that the quality of life in our City is very good. Our parks, schools and streets are great. We have many important businesses and services. The City is very clean, green and beautiful; the Police Department is very good. And property taxes are low. Those many traits make Doral a great place to live and work. Location is superb, with many accesses to main highways and traffic is much better than in the rest of the County. We are always working to improve that and we will continue. As citizens we have to be always vigilant to keep our city the way it is now so many more great businesses as The Miami Herald get interest on becoming part of our community”.

Doral da la bienvenida a un nuevo vecino.

Entrevista Exclusiva con el Sr. David Landsberg, Presidente de The Miami Herald

Después de meses de negociaciones, finalmente el 26 de Enero se hizo publico que The Miami Herald se mudará de su actual ubicación en el Downtown de Miami a una nueva sede en Doral.

Convertirse en sede de una corporación tan importante representa un gran impacto para la Ciudad de Doral y a la vez es un cambio muy importante para los más de 700 empleados del Herald. Esta compañía con 108 años de fundada ha llamado al One Herald Plaza su casa desde 1963 y ese edificio, diseñado por el arquitecto Sigurd Naess, es un icono de la vista de Biscayne Bay. La actual sede del Herald fue vendida en Mayo 2011 y  a partir de allí comenzó un arduo proceso de búsqueda de una nueva sede, en un sitio conveniente y con espacio suficiente para alojar el edificio de oficinas y la rotativa. La mudanza debe ser finalizada a mediados de 2013.

 Doral Family Journal tuvo la oportunidad exclusiva de conocer todos los detalles del proceso de seleccion de la nueva localidad de primera mano, por parte del Sr. David Landsberg, Presidente y Editor de The Miami Herald, quien también nos comento sobre las expectativas que tienen sus empleados sobre lo que será su nuevo vecindario.

El proceso de encontrar un sitio adecuado para ubicar un negocio como el Herald no es tarea fácil, tal como explica el Sr. Landsberg: “Nuestro edificio fue vendido hace cerca de 6 meses y por supuesto la venta incluyó el terreno donde se ubican las oficinas y la planta de impresión. El comprador nos ha dado un margen de tiempo de 2 años que es suficiente para mudar oficinas, pero es bastante ajustado para mudar las rotativas. Inmediatamente pusimos manos a la obra”. Las alternativas incluían mudar la oficina y la planta juntas, mudarlas separadas, alquilar o comprar espacio de oficinas, utilizar edificios ya existentes o construir desde cero. Lo que si estaba muy claro era el ‘dónde’. “Queríamos un sitio que no fuera mas arriba de Gratigny Highway, ni al sur de la 836, porque hacemos muchos negocios también con el condado Broward. Tampoco queríamos irnos más allá de la I95 como estamos hoy y tampoco muy al oeste del Palmetto. Asi que determinamos un gran cuadrado en el centro del Condado y decidimos que necesitábamos estar dentro de ese espacio o bastante cerca de sus límites.” La Ciudad de Doral comienza exactamente en el límite occidental de la caja.

Las razones principales para definir esos límites fueron las siguientes: primero y principal la logística de distribución; luego la proximidad de reporteros y publicistas a sus fuentes de información y clientes y finalmente, pero no menos importante, se tomo en consideración el lugar de residencia de los empleados. “Nuestros empleados residen bastante dispersos por el condado Dade y el sur de Broward. Eso fue una consideración importante para nosotros, la facilidad de nuestros empleados para ir y venir a su trabajo”. Otro aspecto a considerar fue la calidad de vida alrededor de la nueva ubicación. Necesitaban un sitio que fuera agradable y seguro para ir a trabajar. “Buscamos por todas partes y encontramos que Doral es una ciudad muy bien desarrollada, con un crecimiento acelerado y muchas atracciones, servicios, comercios y restaurantes. Un lugar excelente! Para nosotros era muy importante que fuera un sitio cómodo y seguro”.

Sin embargo, el reto principal consistió en encontrar suficiente terreno y espacio para ubicar un negocio de la naturaleza del Herald. “Si tratas de buscar un espacio de alrededor de 160,000 pies cuadrados de oficina, sin contar la planta de producción, no hay muchos espacios en el condado Dade que puedan albergar tu negocio. Realmente no existe en el centro del condado ninguna parte con ese tipo de espacio disponible. Nuestras opciones se redujeron a Downtown y Doral en West Dade. Parte de la decisión incluía obtener el espacio a un precio razonable y definitivamente allí Doral tuvo todas las de ganar al compararlos costos con el centro de Miami”. Adicionalmente, el hecho que Univision, CBS Channel 4 y muchas otras compañías de medios se encuentren ubicadas en o cerca de Doral añadió puntos a la decisión. “Resultaba lógico considerar Doral como la opción mas fuerte”.

Una vez que visitaron el edificio  anterior del Comando Sur, ubicado en el 3511 NW 91 Avenida, supieron que habían dado en el blanco. Bien ubicado, con acceso fácil, bien mantenido y con espacio adicional al lado. Simplemente perfecto para lo que habían estado buscando. “Las características de este edificio lo hacen uno de los mas fuertes en el Sur de Florida, en términos de materiales fuertes y construcción estructural resistente.”

El Miami Herald nunca ha dejado de salir publicado en sus 108 años de historia, por lo tanto contar con un edificio fuerte y confiable fue fundamental para la decisión de la nueva ubicación. “Cuando vimos ese edificio y todo lo que podíamos hacer en el, nos convencimos que era un buen lugar para nosotros. Vamos a rentar el edificio por 15 años y tuvimos la posibilidad de adquirir el terreno de 6 acres contiguo.  El edificio esta en un terreno de 9 acres y en el terreno adicional construiremos la planta de impresión para colocar nuestras rotativas. En conjunto ambos terrenos suman 15 acres, un espacio excelente que es imposible conseguir en ningún otro lugar. La oportunidad de tener el edificio de las rotativas al lado es de gran valor para nosotros. También el edificio cuenta con un poder de generación autónomo increíble, al haber sido una instalación militar. Es un conjunto impresionante de generadores que pudimos adquirir junto con el terreno. Así podemos contar con ellos y tener energía en cualquier eventualidad para producir nuestros periódicos a tiempo. Esa autonomía no la tenemos hoy en día”.

Aparte del alquiler, la remodelación interna del edificio constituye una solución más efectiva en términos de costos. “Es lo mejor de dos mundos. Tenemos uno de los edificios mas solidos del Sur de Florida y suficiente dinero para acondicionarlo para las necesidades de operación de cualquier periódico importante. Esto cubre todas nuestras necesidades. Para toda la operación, contar con los 2 edificios juntos en 15 acres de terreno da la sensación de Sede Principal Corporativa que deseamos”.  Aun cuando el alquiler firmado haya sido por 15 años, al comprar el terreno aledaño y construir el edificio para las rotativas queda claro que The Miami Herald se muda a Doral para quedarse, al menos ese es el plan a largo plazo. “No es fácil estar mudando una compañía de este tamaño con frecuencia, así que estimamos que vamos a quedarnos en la nueva dirección por mucho, mucho tiempo.”

LOS EMPLEADOS SE ACOSTUMBRAN A LA IDEA

El estimado es que alrededor de 700 empleados trabajaran entre el edificio de oficinas y la planta de impresión, aun cuando no todos estarán presentes al mismo tiempo en su trabajo. “Nuestros reporteros y el personal de ventas trabaja mucho fuera de la oficina. Continuarán haciéndolo y utilizarán el edificio como base de operaciones. Si hay un reportero que cubre los hechos del Downtown, es muy posible que no venga a la oficina durante un día entero. Pueden cubrir las noticias y enviar sus reportajes desde cualquier sitio con acceso al internet. El mundo actual nos permite hacer eso cada vez mas. También, para aquellos empleados que viven en el este, movilizarse hacia Doral representara ir en contra del tráfico habitual. Va a ser mucho mas fácil que el viaje actual hacia Downtown de los empleados que viven en el Oeste de Broward.”

El manejo del cambio para los empleados del Herald se ha realizado desde el momento en que se anunció la venta de One Herald Plaza. La comunicación ha sido constante en todo el proceso de búsqueda de un nuevo edificio y se les informaron los detalles en cuanto se concretó la decisión. De ahora en adelante “habrá una comunicación regular con ellos, con respecto al desarrollo y acondicionamiento de la propiedad y también información sobre las mejoras en las vías que impacten el trafico y el tiempo de viaje hacia Doral. Hay muchos proyectos de infraestructura en el Palmetto y otras autopistas que están en marcha y que estarán concluidos en el siguiente año y medio. Por lo tanto procuraremos darles a los empleados la mejor información posible sobre el progreso de nuestro nuevo edificio y las mejoras de las vías circundantes. Queremos ayudarlos a aclimatarse a Doral, a conocer todos los restaurantes y negocios que van a formar parte de vida cotidiana,  todas las cosas que hacen a Doral una ciudad muy especial y que ellos aun no conocen bien.”

DORAL TIENE MUCHO QUE OFRECER

Ante la pregunta de qué puede hacer la comunidad de Doral para apoyar a los empleados del Miami Herald en el proceso  de la mudanza de su sede, el Sr. Landsberg nos dijo: “Algo que necesitaremos con seguridad será apoyo para que el proyecto pueda avanzar con celeridad. No tenemos mucho tiempo, así que esperamos poder hablar pronto con las autoridades de la Ciudad de Doral sobre nuestro proyecto y estoy seguro que tendremos la oportunidad de comentar muchos otros aspectos que ayudarán también a nuestros empleados. Siempre habrá una línea de comunicación abierta con los oficiales de Doral para ser receptivos a cualquier información que nos permita adaptarnos. Para nosotros Doral es una ciudad óptima para el comercio, que recibe con los brazos abiertos a los negocios que quieran invertir y progresar. Según las estadísticas también Doral esta creciendo a nivel residencial y sabemos que es una de las municipalidades con crecimiento mas acelerado en el Sur de Florida. Queremos conocer todo lo que Doral tiene para ofrecernos.”

Con respecto al origen Hispano de la mayoría de los residentes de Doral y el hecho que es una comunidad multilingüe y multicultural, el Sr. Landsberg enfatizó que The Miami Herald “es un negocio que comprende profundamente la diversidad cultural del Sur de Florida. Por ello producimos periódicos en inglés y en español e inclusive una de nuestras publicaciones en español ha sido premiada. Mudarnos del Downtown y adentrarnos en la comunidad nos permite acercarnos a nuestros lectores. Vemos esto como una gran oportunidad.” Y concluye: “Muchas veces el cambio es difícil, solo requiere un poco de tiempo adaptarse. Tenemos un año y medio. Es tiempo suficiente para comprender mejor la cultura de Doral y especialmente todo lo que la ciudad tiene para ofrecer para que nuestros empleados se sientan confortables trabajando allí. Estoy totalmente seguro de ello.”

LA OPINIÓN DE NUESTRO ALCALDE

Alcalde Juan Carlos Bermudez

El 3 de febrero la Ciudad de Doral envió a los medios un comunicado de prensa dando la bienvenida a The Miami Herald a nuestra ciudad. El Alcalde Juan Carlos Bermudez comentó con Doral Family Journal sobre lo que será en su opinión el impacto de recibir este nuevo vecino en nuestra ciudad, en términos de tráfico, población, economía y prestigio para nuestra comunidad.

De acuerdo con el Sr. Bermúdez, como la mudanza de The Miami Herald  será a un edificio que era utilizado anteriormente, el impacto en el tráfico no se espera que sea tan dramático. El edificio se encuentra ubicado en la calle 33, la cual fue extendida desde la avenida 107 hasta la 79 el año pasado, proporcionando fácil acceso desde varios puntos a los edificios que allí se encuentran. Adicionalmente, se encuentra lo suficientemente alejado del área residencial de Doral, de manera que cualquier ruido que se genere por el tráfico de camiones o por las rotativas no cause mayores inconvenientes. Sin embargo, “como el edificio para colocar las rotativas será construido, tendrá que cumplir con las ordenanzas anti-ruido que están vigentes en la Ciudad de Doral y así estaremos seguros que no causará perturbaciones de ningún tipo”.

Antes que el contrato de alquiler del nuevo local para el Herald fuera definitivo, personal de la empresa sostuvo reuniones con la Administración de la Ciudad y otros departamentos, con el fin de obtener toda la información sobre los permisos necesarios y además conocer muchos otros detalles que de una u otra manera impactarían su decisión y cualquier acción subsiguiente. Sin embargo aún no han conocido a las autoridades de la Ciudad. “Coordinaremos un evento con el Concejo para que podamos conocernos y darles la bienvenida a la Ciudad y a nuestra Comunidad” dijo el Sr. Bermúdez.

Para finalizar, nuestro Alcalde añadió: “El crecimiento de Doral refleja el futuro del Condado Miami-Dade. La mayoría de las personas que realmente conocen Doral saben que la ciudad  funciona muy bien: los impuestos son bajos, los servicios son buenos, el gobierno es abierto y transparente y no tienes que hacer política para poder mudarte para acá. Con el tiempo los empleados del se darán cuenta que les va a terminar gustando mucho la ciudad. Hay muchos negocios que deciden mudarse a establecerse en nuestra Ciudad y que nos dicen: Estamos en el centro de todo, hay muchos restaurantes, tiendas, buena policía. Lo más importante es la calidad de vida, nuestros parques, nuestras escuelas, nuestras calles, nuestra limpieza, el departamento de policía, eso es lo que hace la ciudad. Muchos dirigentes de compañías cuando se van a mudar lo que consideran más importante es la calidad de vida. Después el tránsito. Doral esta muy céntrico, tienen muchos accesos y salidas y el tráfico realmente es mucho mejor que el resto del Condado. Siempre podemos mejorar, pero seguimos trabajando para hacerlo. Como comunidad tenemos que cuidar todas esas cosas que mantienen la calidad de vida bien alta en nuestra municipalidad. Debemos estar siempre trabajando por el bienestar de la comunidad.”

The Hispanic Leadership Network (“HLN”) held its national “Inspiring Action” conference at Doral Golf & Spa from January 26-27, 2012.  The two-day event conference featured uplifting messages from some our nation’s top Republican leaders.  The conference was a tremendous success and came at a perfect time—a time when our country continues to face fiscal uncertainty and a disillusioned electorate.  Upon the conclusion of the conference, it was obvious that many of the attendees left with a renewed sense of optimism.

The Conference started on Thursday, January 26, 2012, at Doral’s Champion’s Pavilion with an evening reception to “celebrar nuestra comunidad.”  The reception was followed by an encouraging speech from former Florida Governor, Jeb Bush, who reminded all Americans that we control our own destiny.  Following Governor Bush’s speech, CNN covered the Republican Presidential Debate live from the watch party at Doral.  Then the fireworks began.  But rather than seeing the beautiful fireworks that can illuminate a dark, winter night, the crowed was treated to an uglier display where politicians took continuous jabs at each other and focused on petty politics rather than addressing on the real issues facing our nation.  Notwithstanding, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum all offered interesting perspectives and comments on various topics such as immigration, tax reform, healthcare reform, and the economy, while Ron Paul interjected his comic relief by suggesting that Americans should “send politicians to the moon.”

Perhaps the most interesting part of the Debate was when the presidential contenders were asked how their religious beliefs would affect their decision-making as president.  Rick Santorum provided the best response: “our country is based on God-given rights, not government given rights.  Faith will affect my decision making.  Those who say faith has nothing to do with it are wrong; faith has everything to do with it.”  Santorum’s statement was not only a breath of fresh air in an otherwise contentious debate, but also it exemplified the true purpose of the supreme law of our land—the Constitution of the United States of America.  Our Constitution was established to protect God-given rights: we are one nation under GOD.  Indeed, that’s what makes America different from every other country in the world.  No other country’s principles were founded upon God-given rights, but only government-given rights.  Our current president believes our rights are given to us by the government, which means the government “dictates” when and how rights are are given and taken away.  Make no mistake, government in America was instituted not only to maintain order, but also to protect God-given rights.

Day two of the conference was even more phenomenal.  Those present at the conference included Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, and Marco Rubio, to name a few.  Each presented great speeches.  But in my humble opinion, there was no better speech than that of United States Senator, Marco Rubio.  The Senator made it clear that those of us in the conservative movement draw our strength not only from the laws of man, but through the laws of God.  He reiterated that our nation was founded on spiritual principles, and that our adherence to those principles has showered great blessings upon America.

Although he recognized that the Constitution and our laws are important, Senator Rubio stated: “we live our lives with the knowledge that there is a higher law yet.  We are great because we have been blessed by God.  America is great because it has maintained that all human beings are endowed by God their creator with rights.  That the source of those rights is not your king or your president, your laws or your government, but that you are born with them.”  You have the chance to be or become anything you wish regardless of where you were born or whether your last name ends in a vowel.  In fact, “without immigration, there will be no America,” said Senator Rubio.  As a Cuban American, the Senator’s words resonated with me, especially since my family left everything in Cuban for Freedom and their religious beliefs.  I firmly believe that where we came from is important, but even more important is living a noble life with sound morals and principles.

America is the land of opportunity for everyone, and it has remained such for the past 225 years.  If this century is to be an American century, the only way to achieve that is by distancing ourselves from our current liberal, ever-growing government, and moving closer to our conservative principles of limited government and freedom for all.  America is the country that gives everyone hopes and dreams.  It’s a nation where you can work hard to provide for your family and their future, and it’s the place where every person can pursue their dreams.

There is no question that 2012 is absolutely critical for America.  Similarly, there is little doubt that the Hispanic community will be vital in deciding who will be the person to steer our country in the right direction.  The Conference made me keenly aware of this notion, and I felt compelled to communicate that.  Otherwise stated, the Conference instilled in me a renewed desire to make a difference and become more active in the Hispanic community.  As such, I encourage Doral’s Hispanic community to join me in helping our nation regain strength, prosperity, and opportunity consistent with HLN’s mission.

HLN is an advocacy group focused on engaging the Hispanic community on conservative policies based on the principles of freedom, limited government, and individual empowerment.  Essentially, HLN serves as the forum for conservative, Hispanic advocates across the country whose goal is to restore opportunity and prosperity in America; and, the Inspiring Action conference made that crystal clear. Because Hispanics are the fastest growing minority group in the United States, it is essential that Hispanics voice their opinions loud and clear.  For if we let this critical moment in our nation’s history pass by without inspiration and action, we risk losing the very values that make America great.  Our future is in our hands—it’s up to us.

Dear Friend,

I hope you and your loved ones are having a wonderful start to the New Year and I wish you the best in 2012. I would like to thank you for your support over the years. Your friendship, personal and campaign support have made it possible for me to have the honor and privilege to serve during the last eight and a half years as the first6 ever Mayor of the City of Doral.

As you know, in the second quarter of 2011 I declared my candidacy for Miami-Dade County Mayor for the election scheduled to take place this August of 2012. Many of you have called and written with support and some of you have contributed to the campaign. I thank you very much for having the confidence in my public service to support me publicly.

After much consideration and consulting with my wife and family I have come to the decision that I will not be running for the County Mayor’s position this year. After more than ten years of public service and with a growing family, the time has come to make sure that I can spend quality time with my children and wife. Although my campaign for County Mayor has come to an end, my campaign to reform County government will continue both through the remainder of my term as Mayor of Doral and as a private citizen subsequent to the end of my term as Mayor of Doral this November.

In addition, I will work to make sure that Doral continues to be the most transparent local government in our state and will be working this final year to preserve and solidify all of the gains that have made us one of the great cities in the United States despite being such a young municipality. I will continue to work to protect the legacy of character, integrity, decency and good public policy which we have established and which we should seek from all of our future elected officials in Doral.

Once again, on behalf of my wife Vivian, my daughters Eneida, Elena and Elisa and all of my extended family thank you for your support in the past, present and, hopefully, in the future. It has been an honor to have your friendship and support.

Espero que usted y sus seres queridos hayan tenido un buen comienzo del Año Nuevo, y te deseo lo mejor para el 2012. Quisiera agradecerle su apoyo a lo largo de los años. Su amistad y su apoyo personal y en las campañas, han hecho posible que yo haya tenido el privilegio de servir durante los últimos ocho años como el primer alcalde de la Ciudad de Doral.

Como ya sabes, a finales del 2011declaré mi candidatura a la Alcaldía del Condado Miami-Dade para las elecciones que se realizarán en agosto del 2012. Muchos de ustedes han llamado y han escrito con su apoyo y algunos han contribuido a mi campaña. Les agradezco mucho por haber tenido la confianza en mi servicio público como para apoyarme públicamente.

Tras mucha consideración y haber consultado con mi esposa y mi familia he llegado a la decisión que no continuaré mi postulación a la Alcaldía del Condado este año. Luego de más de diez años de servicio público, ha llegado el momento de asegurarme que puedo dedicarme a mis hijos y mi esposa. TALLAHASSEE – In partnership with The Challenger Learning Center, Walt Disney World©, the Florida State University School and Coaxis International, the Florida Department of Education is pleased to sponsor a new and innovative program geared toward Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students. The first-ever State of Florida Student Astronaut Challenge offers high school students the opportunity to compete in teams to demonstrate their knowledge of aerospace science and problem-solving skills.

“This unique program provides an excellent opportunity to recognize the talents of STEM students throughout Florida,” said Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson. “Our continued focus on STEM programs will help Florida’s students compete for jobs in the 21st century and I applaud our partners for making this special project possible.”

High school student teams are invited to submit a proposal for a scientific experiment that could be conducted on the International Space Station in zero-gravity conditions. A panel of experts in the field of science and science education will evaluate the proposals and choose the top eight teams to travel to Tallahassee in May 2012. Each team will be tasked with an engineering challenge using the mobile NASA Space Shuttle Enterprise Flight Simulator. The teams will present and demonstrate their experiment including pre-flight operations, launch, orbit and landing of the space shuttle flight simulator at the Challenger Learning Center.

“The ‘Enterprise’ Space Shuttle Flight Simulator was constructed as a mobile instructional tool to demonstrate real-world application of science,” stated Peter Carafano, Project Coordinator at the Florida State University School. “The development of the simulator operating system was designed to engage students by immersing them in the experience of space shuttle flight.”

Technology should be an ally to our youth, but it often becomes their worst enemy

In a recent “Univision” feature for the “Educate, es el Momento” project, we got the opportunity to explore various distinct aspects that factor into the possibility of attending college. Mrs. Maria Espinosa was a member of the presentation panel; she is the College Assistance Program Advisor for Ronald Reagan Doral Senior High School. The morning was mainly a relay of information concerning scholarships, aid programs, presentation tips, and resources. We also had the chance to immerse ourselves in a topic that we previously never even thought of, “ Social Networks and their impact on the University admissions process”.

Eileen Cardet, host of News 23 At Dawn, shared that during her time, to choose the university, one had to go through a rather complicated process; each applicant had tor equest information via regular mail on campus, regarding programs offered, aid economic, requirements, etc.. Furthermore, they had to send photos, official documents and rely oneverything they had at hand to achieve the long-awaited acceptance. There was no Internet or email to accelerate the process …. but simultaneously, neither could hinder … what the applicant had previously done was nowhere to be found (except crimes, which were obviously recorded and checked). Immediately, Mr. Bruno Lopez, consultant and former manager of the company says that it is characteristic of youth to commit  ”risky” acts because they do not measure the real impact (and do not consider it bad). We shared an anecdote that is best not to repeat (not want to give any ideas … ..) but from which we can say that in the absence of photographs and clear evidence, it remained as just that, something funny and nothing more. ”At this time, things are different, eeveryone knows about everything you, one is no longer the owner of their actions, but rather a slave of them” he added.

A recent article by Robin Flanigan addressed the issue even further. According to the author the number of universities who review the information from their applicants through social networking has increased. Mr. Flanigan cites that the  Kaplan Test Prep Survey 2011, details that of the 500 universities surveyed, 20% claim to have taken information from google, 24% from web sites and 12% admit to having found negative information access to social networks, mainly compromising photos. Experts agree that education, or rather the re-education is vital to avoid future problems. The problem starts from basic education, we can say without a doubt, that the 5 th grade children already have too much knowledge on how to operate computers, cell phones, social networks, etc.. and parents are rarely able to compete with such great information because they do not understand it all the time. It is useless to insist on prohibitions, children know very well how to overcome them, they tend to believe they know everything, and on the quest to be popular, the innocent often fall …. usually when parents can no longer help them. Another national survey indicated that 75% of children have acknowledged accepting Facebook friends without knowing them, just to increase the number of friends in the network. Many of the boys surveyed and were ready to graduate, said they did not recall any photos or events that had been placed when they were in elementary school, others were unaware that the information that  had “supposedly” been “deleted” remains in place in the pages of your friends (or former friends). Perhaps high school students (High School) are the cautious enough not to publish compromising photos, but they forget that in middle school they might have not taken these precautions. There have been many cases of public lies to harm someone or to create a “cool”profile. They used to say that paper could withstand anything, well it is now the internet.

What to do?
Fortunately we have educators among us that are aware of this ”new danger” and are taking appropriate steps to combat it. The Parent Academy is making presentations at hundreds of schools, counselors such as Mrs. Espinosa are dedicating their time to gather as much information as possible and share with their colleagues, students and parents. Schools, from elementary grades and up are openly discussing the issue and making prevention programs. The police has joined these efforts through the DARE program and other similar programs. In colleges, the Attorney General has sent specialists to give lectures to students and parents about these issues and feedback has been positive throughout. Not being accepted by a college seems like a minor threat compared to the crimes and other offenses that are occurring due to misuse of the Internet.
There is a basic rule that is being asked of teens: “Do not put on the Internet things that you would not want your parents to see” or if parents do not scare ”Do not put on the Internet what you would not want to see  come out in the newspapers. They say first rule of success is having the right information and it is our primary intention to make sure that this subject is explored and disseminated in its entirety. In these days, there are no do overs, so before having to try to ”erase” a situation, plan on avoiding it. That’s something we must all think about every time we turn on a computer.

La Conducta que Exponemos en las Redes Sociales Arriesgan Planes Universitarios.

La tecnología debería ser un aliado para los jóvenes, pero muchas veces se convierte en su principal enemigo.

En una  reciente presentación en Univisión para el proyecto “Edúcate, es el Momento”, tuvimos la oportunidad de explorar distintos aspectos concernientes a la posibilidad de asistir a la universidad. Dentro del panel de presentadores se encontraba la Sra. María Espinosa, College Assistance Program Advisor de la escuela Ronald Reagan Doral Senior High School.

Becas, programas de ayuda, consejos para hacer una buena presentación, recursos y sin número de información fue transmitida esa mañana. También tuvimos  la oportunidad de profundizar en un aspecto que anteriormente no nos competía ni preocupaba: “Las Redes Sociales y su impacto en los Procesos de Selección en las Universidades”.

Eileen Cardet, presentadora de Noticias 23 Al Amanecer, nos compartía que en su época , para elegir la universidad, tenia que pasar por un proceso bastante complicado: cada postulante tenia que solicitar vía correo regular la información del campus, los programas ofrecidos, las ayudas económicas, los requisitos, etc. A su vez, tenían que enviar fotos, documentos oficiales y ampararse en todo lo que tuvieran a la mano para lograr la tan ansiada aceptación. No había Internet ni emails para acelerar el proceso… pero tampoco lo podían obstaculizar, lo que hubiera hecho el postulante previamente no figuraba en ningún lugar (salvo delitos, que obviamente quedaban registrados si se comprobaban). Inmediatamente, el Sr. Bruno López, asesor y ex Gerente de la empresa aseguraba  que es característico de la juventud, el disfrutar cometer acciones “riesgosas” ya que no se miden las reales consecuencias (y no lo consideran malo). Nos compartió una anécdota que es mejor no repetir (no queremos dar ideas…) pero de la cual podemos decir que a falta de fotografías y pruebas evidentes, quedó en eso, algo jocoso y nada más. “En esta época, las cosas son diferentes, todo lo que haces lo sabe todo el mundo, siempre te va a fallar un control, una restricción, uno ya no es dueño de sus acciones, uno es esclavo”, acotó.

Un reciente articulo de Robin Flanigan abordaba el tema  aún con mas profundidad. Según el autor se ha incrementado el número de universidades que revisan la información de sus postulantes a través de la redes sociales. Flanigan cita a Kaplan Test Prep Survey 2011, de cual se detalla que de las 500 universidades encuestadas, el 20% dice haber tomado información de Google, el 24% de las paginas de internet disponibles y el 12% admite haber encontrado información negativa al accesar a las redes sociales, principalmente fotos comprometedoras. Los expertos coinciden que la educación, o mejor dicho, la re educación es vital para evitar problemas futuros. El problema se inicia desde la educación básica, podemos asegurar sin temor a equivocarnos, que los niños de 5 to grado ya tienen demasiado conocimiento como para manipular ordenadores, celulares, redes sociales, etc. y sus padres pocas veces pueden competir con tamaña información ya que no la entienden. De nada sirve insistir en prohibiciones, los niños saben muy bien como superarlas, además tienden a creer que lo saben todo, y en su búsqueda por ser populares, caen por inocentes… Los padres ya no pueden ayudarlos. Otra encuesta nacional indicaba que el 75% de los niños que tienen Facebook reconocieron haber aceptado amigos sin conocerlos, todo por incrementar el número de amigos en la red. Muchos de los muchachos encuestados y que estaban pronto a graduarse, dijeron que no recordaban ni fotos ni eventos que habían colocado cuando estaban en la escuela primaria, otros desconocían que  la información que “supuestamente” habían “borrado”  seguía vigente pero en las páginas de sus amigos (o ex amigos). Quizás los alumnos de secundaria son lo suficientemente cautos para no publicar fotos comprometedoras, pero olvidan que en la escuela intermedia no tomaron esas precauciones. Se han dado muchos casos de mentiras publicadas para hacer daño o para crear un perfil “Cool”. Antes se decía que el papel aguanta todo, ahora Internet aguanta todo”.

 Que hacer ?

Afortunadamente tenemos entre nosotros educadores conscientes de este “nuevo peligro” y están tomando los pasos correspondientes para combatirlo. The Parent Academy esta haciendo presentaciones en cientos de escuelas; consejeras como Ms. Espinosa, están abocadas en obtener toda la información y compartirla con sus colegas, estudiantes y padres; Ya desde la primaria se discute el tema abiertamente y hacen programas de prevención. La policía se ha sumado a estos esfuerzos a través del programa D.A.R.E. y otros programas similares. En escuelas superiores, la Fiscalía General ha enviado a especialistas a dictar conferencia a estudiantes y padres de familia sobre estos temas y la asistencia ha sido siempre favorable.  En realidad no ser aceptado en una universidad, parece un peligro menor frente a los crímenes y delitos que se están produciendo a causa del mal uso de la Internet.

Hay una regla básica que se esta solicitando a los adolecentes: “No pongan en Internet lo que no quieren que sus padres vean” y si los padres no asustan, “No pongan en Internet lo que no quieres que salga en los periódicos”. Partiendo que la primera regla del éxito es tener la información adecuada, es nuestra principal intensión tratar que este tema se explore y difunda  en su totalidad. En esta época ya no se puede volver atrás, así que antes de tratar de “borrar” una situación, evítenla.  Y eso se debe de pensar cada vez que se abre un computador.
